Food for Thought Friday: five fun things! ☕️🍫🍠🌴

Hi friend!

I think we could all use some distractions from the news, so today I'm giving you FIVE FUN (FOOD) THINGS I'm into right now:

1) The Moka Pot! - I just got this recently, it's a simple coffee maker that allows you to make espresso right on your stove top! It's actually kind of a hybrid between espresso and drip coffee, which is my ideal. It's super simple and pretty fast, no filters needed, and I love it! If you want cappuccino drinks, you'll need a frother for milk - I use this handy one and heat the milk up in my cute little "butter warmer" with a pouring spout. I think I'm gonna do a longer coffee-themed-email soon and go into pros/cons/use cases of all my coffee gadgets, but figured I'd introduce you to my new friend!

2) Let's talk about CHOCOLATE. I'm a dark chocolate lover, through and through. I always love trying new bars, but I gotta say, the ones I've been coming back to most in this pandemic are the ones from Hu Kitchen. They are all good, but the salty dark chocolate is my very favorite. The salt is a little crunchy inside. If you need a treat this week, try the sampler pack! (Almond butter puffed quinoa is also a fav.)

3) Speaking of special chocolate... I've actually been eating a super special, meaningful chocolate lately: chocolate covered macadamia nuts from Kuaiwi Farm in Kona, Hawaii! I worked there for three months back in 2015, and I learned how to make chocolate from superstar farmer Una, now my friend. I recently placed an order with her for some treats from the farm (dried bananas! macadamia nuts! coffee! the best CHOCOLATE!) and have been slowly gobbling them up. Una's chocolate is especially fruity + bright in flavor, and I freaking love it. I wrote about the process of making chocolate on my blog while I was on the farm - read part 1 and part 2. Also, if you're in need of a treat/special gift - support this small, family-run farm and place an order! (Fun fact, a lot of the product photos were taken by me as an intern 😊).

4) It's ROASTED VEGGIE SEASON again! Check out my deep dive on roasting times and temps, and my favorite flavor boosting roasting strategy: "spice, sauce, and toss."

5) Sourdough Starter Snacky Pancakes - Did you start baking sourdough bread in quarantine?! If not, it's not too late! It's a really fun hobby :). If you did, and you need a new idea for how to use that sourdough starter discard (the 80% you throw out every time you feed the starter), I've got an idea for you - pancakes!

I started making pancakes with my starter discard and I love them. I don't put anything in them - I just pour the starter straight into a hot cast iron pan with a good amount of oil, let them fry up a bit, flip em, and eat them with cold salted butter on top, sometimes a spice sprinkled on it, or my latest idea this week is to put some chocolate-honey on top. It's the perfect small treat after my savory breakfast bowl and before my coffee. Watch an Instagram video of me making them here.

That's all for today. Have a great weekend and happy cooking! And make sure to VOTEEEEEE!!!!

Love,
Jess
